SF @ COL 5/7/09

SF 8 COL 3

Pitchers:
Jason Marquis RHP Rockies 6IP 8H 7R 5ER 2K
He is a five pitch pitcher. His FB(88-92) is an average pitch and has some two seam movement; His CUT(86-88) is average and doesn't have that much movement; SL(82-85) has some good depth at times but is average pitch; CH(79-81) is average with some arm side run that he likes to throw to Lefties; His CB(75-78) is also average. He works quick with average command. He is a back end of the rotation starter because all of his offerings are average. No Plus pitch. He also looked bad in the field, committing two throwing errors.

Matt Belisle RHP Rockies 1.0IP 1H
He showed two pitches: His FB(89-95) is an above average offering and his SL(86-89) is average. He pounded the zone (19 of 22 pitches thrown for strikes) and looks like he has the stuff to be a solid reliever.

Matt Daley RHP Rockies 1.0IP 1H 1K
He throws from a low 3/4 arm slot and has three pitches. His FB(90-92) is an above average offering, CB(76-77) is average and his CH(80-83) is average. He has average command and threw strikes. He looks like he'll be a dependable middle reliever.

Glendon Rusch LHP Rockies 1.0IP 2H 1R 0ER 1K
A former big league starter, Rusch now seems to be a multiple inning reliever. He has an average FB(88-90), average SL(77-79), straight CH(81) and a slow and average CB(72-74). He is at long reliever/ lefty specialist at this point in his career.

Matt Cain RHP Giants 6.0IP 1H 5BB 7K
He had problems with his command in this game. He walked three batters in the first inning but his control improved as the game went on. His FB(90-96) is an above average offering with some good arm side run, SL(86-88) is an average pitch because he couldn't command it well, CB(72-76) is an above average 12-6 Hammer. When he had problems finding his arm slot he used his CB and his command improved. His CH(84-85) is average and he throws it almost exclusively to LH Hitters. He seemed to get stronger as the game went on and his FB topped out at 96 in the sixth inning. He has the stuff to be an Ace, but his below average command will probably make him at best a #2/3 starter.

Jeremy Affeldt LHP Giants 1.0IP 1H 1ER 1BB
He is a three pitch reliever. His FB(92-96) is an above average offering; His CB(75-79) is an 11-5 curve and is an above average pitch; His CH(87) is average and thrown to RH Hitters. He gave up a solo HR to the Left Handed hitting Brad Hawpe on an outside FB. He seems to be an above average reliever with average command and the stuff to be a solid set up man.

Bob Howry RHP Giants 1.0IP 1K
He relies on his above average sinking FB(92-93) to get most hitters out. He also works with an average, but sharp SL(86) and a straight and below avg CH(84). He has average command and is a solid set up man.

Justin Miller RHP Giants 1.0IP 2H 2ER
He works with three pitches. His FB(86-89) is below average with some arm side run; SL(77-81) is flat and below average and his CH(79-80) is average at best. He works with average command but is a below average reliever with below average stuff. He is a fringe MLB reliever.

Position Players:
Bengie Molina C Giants 3-5 2HR, 5RBI
He hit two HRs off Marquis. He looks to be locked in at the plate right now and is the Giants best hitter. He also worked well with Cain even when he didn't have the best control.

Troy Tulowitzki SS Rockies 0-3, BB, 2K
I was impressed by his play in the field defensively. He looked like a gold glove caliber SS, making numerous tough plays. Then in the ninth, he made an error on a routine grounder. I still think he is one of the best defensive SS I have seen this year.

Dexter Fowler CF Rockies 0-3, BB, 3K
I was a little disappointed by his performance but realize that he is a young player and hadn't been above AA before this season. The Rockies are going to go through some growing pains with him, but from what I've seen in the past I think he's going to be a solid CF in the coming years.
