LAA @ NYY 5/2/09

LAA 8 NYY 4

CC Sabathia LHP Yankees 6.2IP 8H 5R 4ER 1BB 5K

He has Ace stuff and is a notorious slow starter, but he had a decent outing in this game even though the numbers don't look good. He has 3 above average offerings: FB(91-95) SL(77-82) and CH(85-87) and he has above average command. His defense hurt him in the sixth inning (Derek Jeter throwing Error allowing an unearned run). In the seventh inning he was able to get two outs but then a few base hits finding holes allowed four runs to score. I am confident that his numbers will begin to look better as the season goes on because he is a notoriously slow starter and he has the same stuff he's had the last two years.

Jonathan Albaladejo RHP Yankees 0.1IP 1H
He only threw two pitches in the 7th inning. His first was a sinker that was smoked by Mike Napoli for an RBI single. Napoli was then thrown out stealing on the next pitch.

Jose Veras RHP Yankees 1.0IP 1H 1ER 2BB
He works with an above average FB(92-95) and an average CB(75-78). His command is below average which shown by the two walks. He also gave up a long HR to Kendry Morales. He reminds me of Jorge Julio (A hard throwing RHP with above average stuff and erratic command). He'll be consistently giving boom or bust outings unless his command improves.

David Robertson RHP Yankees 1.0IP 1H 2R 1ER 2BB 2K
He has an average FB(87-90) and an above average CB(76-78). He was able to get two quick outs to start the inning and then proceeded to walk Napoli and Morales and a fielding error by Melky Cabrera accounted for the two runs he let up. He seemed to relax after the first two outs and showed his inexperience. He seems like he has the stuff to be a dependable reliever but he needs to make sure he stays concentrated for the whole inning.

Matt Palmer RHP Angels 6.1IP 3H 1ER 2BB 2K
He throws a CUT, 2-seam and 4-seam FB that are all in the 86-90 range. He also mixes in a CB(72-77) and CH(80-82). His repertoire of pitches is average, but he was able to mix locations and speeds very well. He commanded his pitches well enough to get a quality start against a very good Yankees lineup. He reminds me of a Paul Byrd type of pitcher. His ceiling is a quality 4 or 5 starter.

Jose Arredondo RHP Angels 0.2IP 1BB 1K
He is the closer of the future for the Angels. He works with an above average FB(90-93) above average SPLT(82-83) and will mix in a rare SL(84-86), but didn't throw one in this outing. He has average command, but can get a little wild when he rushes his motion. He projects to be an above average back end of the rotation reliever in the next year or so.

Scot Shields RHP Angels 1.0IP 0H 0BB
He pitched a perfect 8th inning, only throwing six pitches. He showed an above average FB(91-93) and a hard above average CB(79). He also has a CH, but didn't show it. He is one of the premiere set up men in the game today.

Fernando Rodriguez RHP Angels 0.2 IP 1H 3R 2ER 2BB 1K
He made his major league debut and looked nervous. He showed an above average FB(89-92). He threw both a four seamer and sinker. His CB(74-77) was another above average offering. It had good 12-6 break and used it to strike out Berroa. He also showed an average CH(86) and it looked like he throws a CUT/SL(87-89). He gave up a two run bomb to Posada on a FB that he left up in the zone. He should have been able to finish the inning, but Matthews dropped a routine Fly in RF and he was subsequently removed from the game. He showed below average control, but it may have been from nerves so I don't want to make any determinations until I see him again.

Jason Bulger RHP Angels 0.1IP 1K
Bulger faced Johnny Damon and struck him out on four pitches. He showed two above average pitches: a hard FB(93-95) and 12-6 CB(80).

POSITION PLAYERS
Brandon Wood 3B Angels- He had two good ABs and two strikeouts on 3 pitches. He went the opposite field with both singles, but needs to shorten his swing with two strikes.

Gary Matthews OF Angels- He had a bad day at the plate 0-5 2K and 5LOB and he made an error on a routine pop out in the 9th inning.

Kendry Morales 1B Angels- He looked very comfortable at the plate 2-4 BB, 2RBI, 2R
